Project Overview

This project involved supply installation and commissioning of network equipment for the upgrade of LAN at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

This involved replacing the Ethernet uplinks which were connecting the different departments at Ministry of Internal affairs with fiber uplinks improving network efficiency, servicing of the air conditioning unit in the server room and improving the general neatness (especially managing all cabling both electrical and Ethernet within the server room.

Problem

All departments at the ministry were interconnected to the core equipment in the server room through Ethernet uplinks. Because of the increased traffic requirements at these departments, the network efficiency was poor affecting service delivery.

The equipment rack was messy with the cable management poorly done. It was so difficult to handle network troubleshooting.

No CCTV cameras were installed in and around the server room to offer security for the equipment installed in the server room.

The switches managing the services were unmanaged switches meaning the network design was flat and was highly susceptible to broadcasts which in turn would affect network performance.

Solution

  • Replaced all Ethernet uplinks with fibre uplinks.
  • Improved Air conditioning in the server room by servicing the existing air conditioning Units.
  • Installed CCTV camera units to offer added security in the sever room.
  • Provided a new IP addressing plan and segmented the network using VLANs to make it easier to manage.
  • Added an Access controller to handle all access points within the ministry.

Conclusion

All tasks were completed successfully.
